Please read re Covid-19 and Whiritoa Lifeguard Service

Dear club member(s)

The Whiritoa Lifeguard Service is committed to ensuring the health, safety and well-being of all our members in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The health of our volunteers, members, and community are our highest priority when making decisions that impact our core activities of Patrolling and Search and Rescue.

After thoroughly considering information provided by Surf Lifesaving NZ and the latest advice provided by the Government, the Whiritoa Lifeguard Service Committee is suspending ALL club services/activities. This decision will be reviewed on Monday 13 April 2020.

This includes, but not limited to; lifeguard training, surf sports training, all social gatherings or overnight stays, and the bar will remain closed. Additionally, the Club Awards and Prize Giving that was to be held at Easter is postponed until 30 May 2020 (Queens Birthday Weekend), however this date may need to be revisited.

Until further notice, permission to enter the Whiritoa Lifeguard Service facilities is required from one of the following people; Garry Christoffersen, Chairperson; Dave East, President; Kane Cocker, Lifeguard Director; Grant Watson, Facilities Director. This directive applies to all people, Club and non-members.

With our Senior Lifeguard members residing all over the country (possible domestic travel restrictions) and not having the resources to meet the Surf Life Saving New Zealand COVID-19 Operations protocols, this means that the Whiritoa Lifeguard Service will not be able provide a surf patrol at Whiritoa Beach over Easter weekend. However, we will be exploring alternative patrolling options with Surf Life Saving New Zealand and we will update you closer to Easter.

While our club’s patrolling is suspended SLSNZ continues to operate call out squads to respond to emergencies in the water. If you see someone in trouble in the water and the beach is not patrolled please dial 111 and ask for police who can request assistance from these specialised teams if required.

To keep up with the latest information from Surf Life Saving New Zealand refer to  and for the latest of COVID-19 from the Governments website at

Keep safe and look after each other.

Kind regards

Dave, Garry, Kane, Ethan, Maiya, Jane, Jodie, Bruce and Grant

Whiritoa Lifeguard Service Committee.
